The mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, a key rival to President Erdogan, was arrested and suspended from his duties on "corruption" charges, sparking widespread protests. Imamoglu denounced the actions as a "coup d'état," while the French Foreign Ministry condemned the arrest as a grave attack on democracy. His party, CHP, also called it a "political coup." Supporters have gathered nightly in large numbers to protest, and a symbolic primary election showed overwhelming support for Imamoglu.
